Again it appears as though Nature will foil our plans. While the skies are only partly cloudy as of 6p.m., a band of thunderstorms associated with a cold front (Or, rather, a cool front) is approaching from the northwest. The clouds are currently stacking up near the Ohio line and moving east. By sundown we anticipate cloudy conditions - Good for vegetable gardens, terribly for star parties. So as to give everyone sufficient advance notice, we have decided to cancel the event again this week. We now have a record of 1-3 for the summer, thus far. We hope the viewing conditions will be better next week. We are also considering trying to hold the event tomorrow (Thursday). Please talk to either Talman or Shawn when you drop off you children on Thursday for details. We strongly encourage all of the Lab Ratz campers and all of the Doodlebugz campers from this week and all past and future weeks to try and attend the next event, if possible. Please check back next Wednesday or call us for details! Here’s to hoping for clear skies next week!

Lab Ratz inject excitement into learning about science By Allison M. Heinrichs TRIBUNE-REVIEW Thursday, January 3, 2008

A clerical error changed Talman Charters Jr.’s career path — and possibly the goals of many children. Charters is president of Lab Ratz Science Club, a hands-on science program that visits schools, scout troops, birthday parties and summer camps to present scientific concepts in a way that encourages children to make their own discoveries. Founded in 2005, the program caught on quickly and already is booking up well into 2008.

“My aspiration was to go to medical school,” said Charters, 26, of Hampton. “But there was a clerical error and my application was never reviewed. … It wasn’t until June when I found out. I had been calling around to different schools and they didn’t even know who I was.”

As an undergraduate, Charters had worked part time with an organization that ran science programs at area schools. Though that group went out of business, Charters believed the idea was a good one.
